Medical waste is a source of generation of hazardous biomedical waste. Medical waste generation and disposal is an important aspect, especially in countries with poor hygiene and high population. Medical centers including hospitals, clinics, and places where diagnosis and treatment are conducted generate wastes that are highly hazardous and put people under risk of fatal diseases. Policies should be framed to avoid spread of infections by providing specification for handling waste for disposal medical waste generation, segregation, collection, storage, transportation, and treatment. Awareness should be created at all levels of society through various means of communication and education, so that the risks of spreading the health hazards could be minimized. This chapter deals with medical waste, principles of waste management program, categories of health-care waste, parameters to be monitored in health-care waste, finances to be managed, and national plans for health-care waste.
Medical waste makes up about 2-3% of the total amount of waste, but this is one of the most hazardous waste. Waste from medical institutions contains dangerous microorganisms, toxic drugs, and carries a radiological hazard. And this is just a short overview of the risks. Therefore, the issue of their disposal is taken very seriously all over the world. In order to reduce the risks of human infection, the spread of infections and the emergence of epidemics, the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute for Retraining and Advanced Training, together with UNDP, has developed a video course on medical waste management. A detailed picture is shared by Nadira Sorombayeva, candidate of medical sciences, head of the department of public health of the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute for retraining and advanced training, an expert engaged in solving the problem of disposal of medical waste. The basic principle of good BMW practice is based on the concept of 3Rs, namely, reduce, recycle, and reuse. The best BMW management (BMWM) methods aim at avoiding generation of waste or recovering as much as waste as possible, rather than disposing. Therefore, the various methods can i use iodine on my skin of BMW disposal, according to their desirability, are prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, treat, and lastly dispose. Hence, the waste should be tackled at source rather than “end of pipe approach. Medical waste disposal is one of the biggest day-to-day challenges faced by healthcare providers. It’s often complicated by other concerns like HIPAA compliance, epidemiology, potential civil litigation, and state and local regulations. Because at MedPro Waste Disposal we aim to help providers like yours by answering your questions and providing solutions to your medical waste issues, we’re taking a look at the key concepts surrounding medical waste. Toxicity concerns are considerable when it comes to managing medical waste, but so are the sheer number of waste types found in facilities that typically produce this type of waste. As a medical waste generator, you are responsible for managing all aspects of your waste, from the moment it is generated to its final disposal. Not doing so will put you in jeopardy of violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and may result in substantial fines and penalties. Disposing is more than simply driving the waste to the landfill, however. Certain medical waste must be treated before it is properly disposed of, while other items can be recycled to help promote your institution’s sustainability efforts. All medical waste must be disposed of responsibly, even if it is not considered particularly hazardous. In order to reduce the risks of human infection, the spread of infections and the emergence of epidemics, it is important to properly sort and dispose of medical waste. Medical personnel are advised to use a specially designed video course, which details the categories of medical waste and how they are disposed of. Some hospitals have on-site incineration technology and equipment available. Some don’t. On-site incineration reduces volume of medical waste transported from the facility to a landfill or another disposal site (transported by a medical waste removal company), which can save the generator thousands of dollars per load. Pre-treatment not only reduces volume of internal medical waste heading to landfills (as non-infectious or decontaminated waste) but also ensures a reduction or complete removal of potentially infectious materials found on a variety of medical waste streams produced by the hospital. State regulations may mandate off-site incineration for certain types of waste. Not all states allow incineration, depending on volume, due to concerns of pollution and damage to air quality. Medical waste goes by several names that all have the same basic definition. All of the terms below refer to waste created during the healthcare process that’s either contaminated or potentially contaminated by infectious material.
The process of autoclaving involves steam sterilization. Instead of incineration, which can be expensive, autoclaving simply introduces very hot steam for a determined amount of time. At the end of the process, microorganisms have been completely destroyed. This process is particularly effective because it costs much less than other methods, and doesn’t present any personal health risks. While some biomedical waste isn’t able to be disposed of via autoclaving, around 90% of materials are sanitized this way before being sent on to a landfill. It is generally understood that incineration is the most common practice, but is it really the most advantageous? Some would say that autoclaving is perhaps the most economical and safe choice. Steam is not harmful, there are no emissions, and it is not nearly as expensive. The fact that it works for most biomedical waste is also important. BWS conducts autoclaving to ensure that all biomedical waste is safe to dispose.
